Last Year's Sweatpants

Sweatpants | The Modern Otter

This is one of those times when I saw something styled in a magazine and actually tried it.

I was reading this month's copy of GQ and there is a giant spread with Patrick Stewart looking stylish AF. There's a photo with him backstage at the Belasco Theatre, his legs kicked up on a makeup table, reading a script. He's wearing a textured peacoat, striped henley and cut off sweatpants. His converse are unlaced and he has on ankle-length athletic socks.

It's just so... effortlessly cool looking.

I have been a long time fan of Sir Patrick's. Not just his Captain Picard, but his theatre work and his Instagram (he just adopted a puppy and keeps posting videos... It's freaking adorable.) The way he's styled in the magazine is exactly how I hope to dress when I'm his age. Also right now.

But the whole image got me thinking. Jogger pants are on their way out. Sorry... but they are. So rather than get rid of them, why not just cut the jogger portion off the bottom and make them into cropped pants?!?

It's a crazy easy way to re-invent something that's already in your closet. People do it all the time, turning their jeans into shorts, so why not?

Plus, the ones Patrick has on are $149. Mine were like $25 a year ago.

I'm going to try it with my other chino joggers, but I figured I'd start with my sweatpants. Not quiet as tailored through the hip as I would like, but they work!

I paired the newly cropped joggers back to elevated basics: a silk-cashmere tee from Club Monaco, a leather moto jacket from Reiss and these fresh sneakers from Tretorn

It's my, "let's run errands but look like the best possible version of ourselves just rolling out of bed".

What do you think of the look?? Would you try it with your old sweatpants??
