Why Fleece

I geek over fabric knowledge and design because I think it’s important to know where your clothing comes from and why it’s made the way it is. There are so many cool features in the clothing we wear that we never think about!

Fleece, for example, is a relatively new fabric in the fashion industry. It was invented in 1979 as a wool-alternative, and is actually warmer, lighter and more durable than wool. Above all of that, it’s moisture resistant. Which makes it perfect for colder weather and sports activities around water and snow. You can see water form on the surface of the fabric rather than soak in right away.

Nautica is one of those iconic brands who bridge the gap between performance-wear and fashion. Their designs are inspired by sailing and the water, but also serve a very practical function. This fleece jacket is incredibly lightweight, yet super warm. I can wear it on it’s own now, but when it gets colder out, it’ll be the first thing I layer under a peacoat.

On a separate note, I wanted to style boat shoes with this look because it felt so perfect with the nautical direction of the look. I do have one rule though when styling boat shoes and long pants (whether it’s chinos or denim): always show ankle! I wear no-show socks and roll my cuffs up an extra roll. Boat shoes are easy to style in the summer, but you can rock them into fall if you ditch the tall socks and embrace a little skin. It’s ok. The fleece will keep you warm. ;)
